About
About This Website and CD-Rom
This Website and CD-Rom were produced
as part of the project entitled “Yol\u
Theories of Transformation’, funded by the Cooperative
Research Centre for Aboriginal and Tropical Health (www.ath.crc.org.au),
Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia.
Joanne
Gar\gulkpuy was the principal
investigator on the project. The project looked at
Yol\u systems of leadership, authority, decision-making
and management. Yalu’ Mar\githinyaraw was the subject
of a case study of Yol\u leadership. The findings of
this part of the research are presented in this Website
and CD-Rom.
Galiwin’ku Community

in northeast Arnhemland, Northern Territory, Australia,
located 450km North East of Darwin (click icon for map) .
The population of Galiwin’ku is
approximately 1,000 people, and the town also services

the languages of the area which are collectively called ‘Yol\u
Matha’ (language/tongue of the people).
Yalu’ Mar\githinyaraw
Since 2000, Yalu’ Mar\githinyaraw, or Yalu Nurturing
Centre, has been operating at Galiwin’ku. The organisation
is wholly run by Yol\u, and funded by the Commonwealth
Department of Family and Community Services.
Funding
supports four part-time positions, and many other community
members work on a voluntary basis on Yalu’ Mar\githinyaraw's programs.
Their activities aim to promote healthy lifestyles
and a strong community by focusing on the interface
between
health and education.
As well as a strong emphasis on
service delivery, the organisation conducts research,
both independently and in partnership with outside bodies.
The activities of the group are guided by the Clan
Management Committee, which includes representation
from each of the major clans that make up the Galiwin’ku
community. They can be contacted on 08 8970 5019 or at yalumarnggithinyaraw@bigpond.com. Supporting Organisations
